Phil Murphy’s approval of a statewide funding adjustment will include staff reductions as well as a dip into the district’s surplus fund.

This year’s $1,913,022 cut will be the smallest of seven annual cuts until funding will be permanently cut by $22 million. The district was required by the state Department of Education to submit a plan of action and have it approved by the Board of Education by Aug. 1. The meeting where the plan will be ratified will take place Tuesday, July 31.

According to the plan, the district will shed several teachers and supervisors plus remove $1,348,276 from the school system’s surplus account. The positions being eliminated include a humanities and science supervisor, one high school teacher, two resource room teachers, one bilingual education teacher and two elementary school teachers.

The plan was formulated “based on discussions between the Brick Township Board of Education and administration,” the planning document said. In all, the reductions in staffing will save $564,746.

The planning document did not detail whether the positions would be eliminated through layoffs or attrition. The district has sent out more than 100 layoff notices to staff members. Even before the state cut the district’s funding, the Board of Education voted to eliminate 44 positions and raise property taxes about 4 percent.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Professional Development Center, located adjacent to the board office on Hendrickson Avenue.

The Brick school district’s plan to account for the $1.9 million in funding taken away from the district following Gov.
