The find garnered the interest of jellyfish experts from the east coast to Hawaii, since sightings of such jellyfish are so rare at the Jersey Shore.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Meaney found another potential box jellyfish that washed up in the surf on the beach and immediately called <span data-ft=\"{&quot;tn&quot;:&quot;K&quot;}\" data-reactid=\".18.1:3:1:$comment900367779981063_900519849965856:0.0.$right.0.$left.0.0.1:$comment-body\"><span class=\"UFICommentBody\" data-reactid=\".18.1:3:1:$comment900367779981063_900519849965856:0.0.$right.0.$left.0.0.1:$comment-body.0\"><span data-reactid=\".18.1:3:1:$comment900367779981063_900519849965856:0.0.$right.0.$left.0.0.1:$comment-body.0.$end:0:$0:0\">Bud Gillan, a high school science teacher from Florida who is also a well-known jellyfish expert. Still, the sighting of a box jellyfish anywhere near land \u2013 much less on a local beach \u2013 is extremely rare to the point of being virtually unheard of.<\/p>\n<p>Box jellyfish are most commonly found off the coast of Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>Gillan posted on the Facebook page that an initial look at the jellyfish seems to indicate it is from the genus Tamoya, which is in the \u201c<span data-ft=\"{&quot;tn&quot;:&quot;K&quot;}\" data-reactid=\".18.1:3:1:$comment900367779981063_900611646623343:0.0.$right.0.$left.0.0.1:$comment-body\"><span class=\"UFICommentBody\" data-reactid=\".18.1:3:1:$comment900367779981063_900611646623343:0.0.$right.0.$left.0.0.1:$comment-body.0\"><span data-reactid=\".18.1:3:1:$comment900367779981063_900611646623343:0.0.$right.0.$left.0.0.1:$comment-body.0.$text0:0:$0:0\">dangerous, not deadly<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201d category. Box jellyfish are generally considered highly venomous and pack a nasty sting which often lands bathers who come into contact with them in the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span data-ft=\"{&quot;tn&quot;:&quot;K&quot;}\" data-reactid=\".18.1:3:1:$comment900367779981063_900611646623343:0.0.$right.0.$left.0.0.1:$comment-body\"><span class=\"UFICommentBody\" data-reactid=\".18.1:3:1:$comment900367779981063_900611646623343:0.0.$right.0.$left.0.0.1:$comment-body.0\"><span data-reactid=\".18.1:3:1:$comment900367779981063_900611646623343:0.0.$right.0.$left.0.0.1:$comment-body.0.$text0:0:$0:0\">We need more specimens to do the morphology and genetics<\/span><\/span><\/span>,\u201d said Gillan, who added that Meaney\u2019s finds are \u201cmaking jelly history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Locals should be on the lookout for box jellyfish in order to collect them for future specimens, though they should never be handled with one\u2019s bare hands.
